Is “Waterproof Jewellery” Just Marketing… or Is It Real?

You’ve probably seen it everywhere — waterproof jewellery.
It’s on websites, in ads, all over Instagram. But what does it actually mean?

Let’s keep it simple and honest.

So… is waterproof jewellery real?

The short answer is: yes… but also not exactly how it sounds.

Most jewellery labelled as “waterproof” is made from stainless steel with a gold coating (often PVD plated).
This makes it much stronger and more resistant to water than traditional gold-plated jewellery.

So yes — you can shower in it, swim in it, wear it all day without stressing.

But here’s the part people don’t always say...

“Waterproof” doesn’t mean nothing will ever change.

Over time, things like:

salt water, chlorine, perfume and lotions, everyday wear can still affect the gold layer.

The difference is — it happens much slower, and the jewellery is made to handle real life.

So why is everything called waterproof?

Because compared to traditional jewellery, it really is a game changer.

It’s easy. Low-maintenance. Made to live in.
You don’t have to think twice before jumping in the ocean or heading into the shower.

And let’s be honest —
“durable, water-resistant stainless steel jewellery” doesn’t sound quite as good 😉

How we see it at The Blonde Chaos

We like to keep things real and give you options.

That’s why we work with different materials, depending on how you like to wear your jewellery:

Stainless steel (our waterproof pieces)
Strong, affordable, and made for everyday wear. These pieces are low-maintenance but cannot be re-plated.

Gold-filled jewellery
A thicker gold layer that lasts longer and can handle water well. A beautiful step closer to solid gold.

Gold-plated jewellery
More delicate, but can be re-plated and refreshed over time.

The bottom line

Waterproof jewellery isn’t a trick…
but it’s also not magic.

It’s jewellery designed to keep up with your life — beach days, busy mornings, salty skin and all.

And with a little care, it will stay beautiful for a long time.

A little extra care goes a long way

If you want your pieces to stay golden for longer:

rinse after swimming in the ocean , avoid spraying perfume directly on your jewellery, store it dry when you’re not wearing it... Simple habits that make a real difference.

Because jewellery should feel easy — and made to move with you, not slow you down!
